Turner makes docs move with World Heritage Channel

Ricky OwTurner Broadcasting System is launching a new premium factual channel to showcase world heritage sites.

World Heritage Channel will launch in Asia and be programmed across categories including nature, travel, history and culture.

Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific said: “The channel’s signature content will take discerning viewers on inspiring and immersive journeys to the most treasured places on earth – UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.”

Turner has acquired a raft of content for the new channel including Journey to Natural World Heritage Sites, Beautiful Planet, Asia’s Monarchies and Asia Rising.

It has picked up travel docs including Travel Bug and Paradise Asia and David Attenborough natural history series David Attenborough’s Conquest of the Skies and David Attenborough’s Flying Monsters.

Ricky Ow (pictured), president of Turner Asia Pacific, said: “The debut of this stunning channel is the beginning of a fourth channel genre for Turner in Asia. Alongside our landmark brands in news, kids and general entertainment, the World Heritage Channel is a perfect entry for Turner into the documentary genre.

“We believe the channel will appeal to a select audience who are seeking a premium, authentic and serious documentary destination. We look forward to introducing this beautiful new offering around Asia in the coming months.”

Content on the HD channel will be subtitled for local markets into Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia, Bahasa Indonesia and Thai subtitles.

Turner did not say which pay TV platforms the channel will be carried on. A spokesman told TBI that it hoped to announce carriage deals soon.
