DirecTV moves into original programming

US pay TV platform DirecTV has commissioned Rogue, its first original drama  series, after striking a deal with Entertainment One (eOne).

The company, which has close to 20 million subscribers in the US, will launch the suspense drama next year on its Audience Network channel. It will be the company’s first moves into original programming and comes after the broadcaster cofinanced series including Damages and Friday Night Lights and acquired first run international series including Hit & Miss, Underbelly and The Slap.

Rogue stars Crash’s Thandie Newton as a emotionally conflicted cop who is tormented by the possibility that her actions have contributed to her son’s death and complicated by the fact that she is in a relationship with a crime boss.

The series, which is coproduced by British production company Greenroom Entertainment, will also air in Canada on Astral’s The Movie Network and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central.

eOne will handle international distribution of the series.
