Focus on Spain: Imagina sailing The Boat into the US

Spanish producer and distributor Imagina is in talks to adapt its hit series The Boat in the United States.

Globomedia, the production arm of Imagina, and its international distribution arm Imagina International Sales are currently negotiating the format sale with an unnamed US producer.

Globomedia executive chairman Daniel Ecija said that the supernatural missing-at-sea drama, which is known as El Barco in Spain where it aired on Antena 3, shared similarities with JJ Abrams’ series such as Lost.

This follows last year’s remake of El Internado (The Boarding School) by CBS, which wasn’t picked up after its pilot.

The Spanish production company also announced the commission of two new series; Luna, El Misterio de Calande (Moon, the Mystery of Calande), a werewolf series picked up by Antena 3, and an untitled fashion comedy commission by Telecinco.

“This show is a show about fashion, about people who work in a fashion magazine,” said Ecija. “It’s a mix between Aaron Sorkin and Steven Bochco; when you can be funny and have edge.”

This article is part of a week-long series looking at developments in the Spanish TV market. TBI’s January issue will focus on the Spanish market and be published in English and Spanish.
