Channel 4 adds ‘Dr Death’ & ‘Queer As Folk’ in drama & comedy expansion

Dr Death

UK comcaster Channel 4 has acquired a slew of new drama and comedy titles as part of its ‘summer of streaming’ for its newly rebranded streaming service.

Last week, the broadcaster unified its digital, social, and linear channels, including its VOD service All 4, together under one single banner – Channel 4.

The Channel 4 streamer has picked up titles including Peacock original Dr Death, the drama series based on the Wondery podcast of the same name, inspired by the true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch. Joshua Jackson plays the doctor, a charismatic rising star in the Texas medical community, whose patients suddenly began to leave his practice maimed – or not at all.

Also coming to Channel 4 in the months ahead is Queer As Folk, Stephen Dunn’s reimagining of the British drama series created by Russell T. Davies, following a diverse group of friends in New Orleans whose lives are transformed in the wake of an unimaginable tragedy that rocks their community.

Becoming Elizabeth, created and written by Anya Reiss,  is the untold story of England’s most iconic Queen, before she ascended the throne, while The Girl From Plainville is is inspired by the true story of Michelle Carter’s controversial “texting-suicide” case.

Other additions include Cruel Summer, from executive producers Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple, a thriller told over three summers in the 1990s, as a girl goes missing from a small town in Texas and another mysteriously takes over her life.

Meanwhile, previously announced Channel 4 originals include the return of prison drama Screw, crime thriller Before We Die, and brand-new comedy drama The Change, created by and starring Bridget Christie.

Zaid Al-Qassab, CMO at Channel 4, said: “Channel 4 is passionate about bringing British viewers programmes they love and new ones they’re yet to discover. By bringing all our shows together under our iconic ‘Channel 4’ brand, we’re making it even easier for audiences, particularly younger viewers, to find and stream the very best telly available in the UK.”
