WBD ups Globo alum to lead scripted, ahead of Marcelo Tamburri exit

Monica Albuquerque

Warner Bros. Discovery in Latin America has promoted Monica Albuquerque to oversee its scripted output.

Albuquerque joined WBD in 2021 as head of talent & telenovelas following more than two decades at Globo in Brazil and will take on part of the remit of Marcelo Tamburri, whose exit was revealed yesterday.

She will work across development of all original scripted projects for HBO Max and WBD’s Lat Am pay TV networks, while retaining oversight of research and talent management across all content.

Albuquerque will continue to report into WBD’s EVP & chief content officer for entertainment, Tomás Yankelevich.

He said the exec’s “deep experience and fresh look” at drama would boost its scripted output, as would her experience with talent.

Tamburri, who had been WBD’s VP of scripted content development for Latin America & US Hispanic, revealed yesterday he is to exit the company at the end of March, after almost 20 years. The exec now plans to embark on new development and production projects.

His exit follows senior WBD departures in Europe in recent days, with HBO Max EMEA content chief Antony Root also set to exit the media giant at the end of March. Other moves have seen Steve Matthews, VP & executive producer of scripted for HBO Europe, heading to Banijay in the newly created role of content partnerships executive.
