Netflix preps UK reality show & orders true crime docuseries

Netflix has ordered three new UK-produced reality and entertainment series, along with a true crime docuseries.

Unveiled at the Edinburgh TV Festival yesterday, the new UK shows include Snowflake Mountain, a reality series which takes a bunch of “clueless kidults” who aren’t yet living to their full potential and puts them through their paces at a wilderness survival retreat to try and kickstart them into standing on their own two feet.

The series is produced by Fremantle label Naked and executive produced by Cal Turner and Jo Harcourt-Smith, while Andy Cullen, Nick Walker, Cherry Sandhu serve as series producers.

Lime Pictures is producing Dance Monsters, a “large-scale” dancing competition, which sees contestants compete in a way they’ve never been able to before. Through the power of VFX, live motion capture and facial recognition, competitors will transform into loveable and fantastical dance monsters that come to life in front of an expert panel of judges and a live studio audience.

Sarah Tyekiff, Andrew Jackman and Tamsin Dodgson will executive produce.

Meanwhile, Dated And Related is produced by All3Media labels Great Scott Media and Main Event Media. The reality dating series features pairs of siblings who get to see each other’s love life up close and personal as they search for ‘the one’ together.

Leon Wilson, Ed Sleeman and Saul Fearnley exec produce for Great Scott, while for Main Event, Jimmy Fox serves as exec producer and Emily Bon co-exec produces.

Netflix managers of unscripted series UK, Ben Kelly and Daisy Lilley, commented: “Over our past couple of years at Netflix, we have been thrilled by the ideas pitched to us from production companies in the UK; ideas that are fresh, thought-provoking and playful, a perfect combination for our unscripted slate.

We look for series that have a unique take on a familiar concept and put innovative twists on shows that you wouldn’t find anywhere else, so that we can deliver something truly original.”

Anti-mafia docuseries

In related news, Netflix has also ordered Vendetta: Truth, Lies And The Mafia, a new six-part original true crime docuseries telling the story of two leaders at the Sicily’s anti-mafia movement.

Produced by Nutopia in collaboration with Mon Amour Films, the series will debut on Netflix on 24 September, and explore how journalist and TV host Pino Maniaci and Court of Palermo Judge Silvana Saguto, both ended up accused of committing the very crimes they’ve battled against for decades.

The series written and produced by Ruggero di Maggio and Davide Gambino of Mon Amour Films and Nicola Moody, David Herman, and Jane Root of Nutopia.
