The Commons

Sundance Now snags The Commons

AMC Networks’ streamer Sundance Now has picked up exclusive US and Canadian rights to Australian drama series The Commons.

The drama, which stars Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey, Liar), explores a couple’s bid to have a child in a world affected by climate change and a growing divide between rich and poor.

It has been produced by Playmaker and is sold by Sony Pictures Television, with creator and writer Shelley Birse (The Code) attached as showrunner. The eight-parter drama made its world premiere on Australian streamer Stan.

CBC, Pier 21 develops with YouTube star

Canadian pubcaster CBC has started development on a scripted series with Beaverton producer Pier 21 and YouTube personality, Jasmeet Singh Raina (aka Jus Reign).

Late Bloomer (w/t) is a half-hour series inspired by Raina’s real-life experiences, focusing on his journey navigating his newly found internet fame, dating, spirituality, culture and his dysfunctional (yet loving) family.

“Jasmeet is a one-of-a-kind talent and the latest in the long line of incredible Canadian comedians to find stardom on the global stage. We are thrilled to be partnering with him on his signature television project,” said Bill Lundy, SVP of development for Pier 21.

“The series Jasmeet has created offers him the freedom to delve into a longer narrative allowing him to be more authentically funny and vulnerable than ever before.”

Jus Reign claims to have secured more than 167 million YouTube views, with 970,000+ subscribers and more than one million fans on Facebook. The CBC show is being co-produced by Pier 21 and Reign Productions, with Raina starring, writing and exec producing.
