MGM partners with China Star Omnimedia for format push

MGM Television has linked up with China Star Omnimedia on a new development and production format deal.

The arrangement will see the companies co-develop and co-produce local-language shows for the Chinese market, with China Star Omnimedia taking distribution in China. MGM Television will distribute globally.

China Star Omnimedia is behind local remakes of shows such as The Voice and King of Masked Singer, while MGM has been expanding its unscripted output over recent years, promoting Survivor and Shark Tank producer Mark Burnett to chairman of its Worldwide Television Group last year.

Roye Meng, executive director of China Star Omnimedia, said: “MGM’s deep experience in creative storytelling and unparalleled expertise in producing global formats will help us expand and accelerate our capabilities in the alternative content space.”

Burnett added: “The influence that China Star Omnimedia has on pop culture is second to none and underscores the immense opportunity that lies ahead with this exciting new partnership.

“The country’s incredibly rich culture provides a huge trove of possibilities in the alternative programming space, and we look forward to working with our colleagues in China to entertain new generations of audiences around the world.”
