Netflix hires Monika Shergill to run Indian originals

Netflix India has appointed Monika Shergill as head of original programming in the country.

Shergill served as EVP and head of content at Viacom18 Digital, which runs local streaming platform Voot.

Based in Mumbai, Shergill replaces Simran Sethi, who recently announced her departure from Netflix.

Netflix has ramped up its original output in India since launching in 2016, announcing 11 originals and 22 original films since debuting with Sacred Games.

Netflix has also greenlit local comedy specials, non-fiction content and kids series such as Mighty Little Bheem.

Shergill’s title will be head of series for international originals at Netflix India.

She will join the company in a couple of months, and will report into Netflix VP international originals Bela Bajaria.

Viacom18 is a joint venture between Viacom and broadcasting group Network18. Viacom18 runs networks such as MTV India, VH1 India, Comedy Central and Hindi entertainment channel Colors.
