Telenor said that video accounts for some 70% of broadband network traffic overall and that Netflix recently overtook YouTube and other services under the Google umbrella as the largest single source of traffic on its network.
Google sites now account for 20% of network traffic according to Telenor stats, while Netflix set a new traffic record on Telenor’s network on June 11 – the first Sunday after the launch of season five of Netflix original Orange is the New Black.
“The popularity of YouTube and Netflix holds up well,” said Birgit Bjørnsen, head of broadband and TV at Telenor Norway. “The trend is that video takes greater proportions of all the traffic that goes through the broadband network, and video services on the Internet is a routine part of everyday life in many Norwegian families.”
Telenor signed a CDN deal with Netflix in 2014 to move the SVOD service’s content close to Telenor’s network, to servers in Oslo and Stockholm, in a bid to offer a faster and more stable connection.
Since Netflix launched in Norway in 2013 Telenor claims that Norwegians’ use of the service has quadrupled.
