NBC selects drama pair & shuts Emerald City

Scripted-logo-460_2US broadcaster NBC has given the greenlight to a pair of dramas, and also cancelled 2016-17 season series Emerald City.

The Comcast-owned network has ordered full seasons of Rise and For God & Country.

Rise is a drama from Friday Night Lights’ Jason Katims and Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller. It stars Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) and is based on a book about a groundbreaking high school drama teacher.

True Jack Productions and Seller Suarez Productions are attached, Universal Television the lead studio and NBCUniversal International Distribution will sell the show globally.

For God & Country is a military-themed drama from Universal and Keshet Studios about an elite team of operatives who use advanced surveillance techniques to execute dangerous missions.

Dean Georgaris wrote and executive produced the pilot, and Keshet’s Avi Nir and Alon Shtruzman are among the other exec producers.

Meanwhile, ahead of its upfront and more new season pick ups, NBC has ended the Wizard of Oz-inspired Emerald City after one season.

The Universal TV-produced show launched earlier this year, but failed to gain a significant audience, and has been axed to free up real estate of the NBC schedule ahead of the 2017-18 season.
