Since the ending of season six, fans have been desperate to know the outcome of a particular dark scenario for hero Rick Grimes and his band of survivors. Last night in the US, they found out (and that’s the extent of the spoilers you’ll find here).
European viewers tonight get their opportunity to see the series, which goes out within 24 hours of the US broadcast on Fox networks around the world. That fervour reached zombie-horde proportions in Hungary last week, meaning The Walking Dead reclaims the overall top spot for the first time in months. Data provider Parrot Analytics notes demand has been rising in other European territories too.
Not far behind (1,251,208 plays 1,044,093) is Pretty Little Liars, whose average daily demand expressions continue to surprise. The Big Bang Theory comes in third, a good result for the perennial comedy, while new HBO hit Westworld continues to garner chatter and places fourth.
Coming in fifth is Luke Cage, whose 850,144 average expressions means it easily outranks Netflix compatriot Stranger Things to top the digital chart in Hungary (more on that below).
Surprisingly, Game of Thrones has slipped to sixth place overall, its worst ranking to date, perhaps suggesting the ongoing debate and rumour has been replaced, in part, by the big Walking Dead It will hop to bounce back in following weeks as its rival big hitter settles into season seven.
On the digital front, Netflix titles completely dominate, with Luke Cage and Strangers Things well ahead of House of Cards, Narcos and new entry Haters Back Off. It’s fair to say both titles are surpassed market expectations, and mean there is added interest in new Netflix series such as Easy, the comedy-drama anthology effort from micro-budget filmmaker and producer Joe Swanberg that debuted internationally on September 22.
Orange is the New Black once again charts, while Marvel pair Jessica Jones and Daredevil and BoJack Horseman once again feature.
We’ve featured Hungary this week as the Digital TV Central & Eastern Europe conference gets underway in the territory.
