Sony’s Crackle preps Charlie Sheen original

Sony’s OTT service Crackle has greenlit Mad Families, a comedy film featuring troubled star Charlie Sheen as a loveable man child.

The film will follow three families from different ethnic backgrounds who find themselves sharing the same space on a bank holiday camping trip and end up competing against each other in a series of competitions. Charlie Sheen plays the lead and will also exec produce.

The TV movie was written by Saturday Night Live alumnus David Spade and Drunk Parents scribe Fred Wolf, both of who are former stand-up comics.

The pair worked with Crackle before, penning Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, a digital-only sequel to the movie Joe Dirt, for the streaming service.

“It’s great to be back in business with Fred, and to have Charlie on board. The combination of Fred’s unique comedic voice and Charlie’s sharp wit and gift for physical humour is sure to be ‘winning,'” said Eric Berger, executive VP, Digital Networks, Sony Pictures Television and General Manager, Crackle.

“Original movies are a key component of our ongoing programming strategy.”

Crackle is available in the US and 21 international countries, excluding the UK, where the service closed. Its other originals include Jerry Seinfeld series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Bryan Cranston animated comedy SuperMansion, and gameshow Sports Jeopardy!
