Amazon Germany may bag Deutschland 86

Scripted-logo-460_2Deutschland 83Amazon Prime Video Germany looks set to pick up first-run rights to the second instalment of Deutschland 83, with its linear broadcaster wavering on a recommission.

RTL has not yet committed to financing Deutschland 86 after the first season, which was critical and ratings smash internationally but fared less well locally.

German TV trade site dwdl.de reported this has prompted Amazon to swoop in and pick up Deutschland 86, which is expected to be followed by a third effort, Deutschland 89.

FremantleMedia’s German prodco UFA Fiction has signed up to produce the season, according to the report.

FremantleMedia declined to comment this morning, as did a rep for Amazon Prime Video Germany.

UFA Fiction refused to comment when contacted by dwdl.de, while RTL, which owns FremantleMedia, could not be contacted.

Deutschland 83 goes out in the US on SundanceTV, which is a part financier, while FremantleMedia International has sold it globally to territories such as the UK, where it became the biggest ratings foreign-language series on record.

The series, set in the 1980s, follows a young soldier from East Germany who is forced to go undercover in West Germany to gain intelligence.
