In-demand charts: Italy (June 26-July 2, 2016)

TBIv_InDemand_Italy_siteOur latest in-demand chart, this week coming from the southern European country of Italy, throws up familiar results and a couple of surprises. At the top of the rankings, Orange is the New Black and Game of Thrones rule supreme.

Italy_Top10_DigitalOITNB edges slightly ahead of animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which has taken up its highest position so far in our digital charts. GOT leads the overall charts, but is flanked by Gomorrah, an Italian mafia drama from Sky.

This shows that while Italy’s scripted scene is evolving with coproduction such as The Young Pope, which will soon launch across the European Sky pay TV platforms, the country’s complex relationship with its famous criminal underworld remains a central focus. That it only trails GOT’s 14.5 million average daily demand expressions by 4.5 million clearly underlines the fact.

Trailing in third place, with 6.4 million demand expressions, is Pretty Little Liar, which has proven popular across the European continent. Grey’s Anatomy has little over half that number, but still takes fourth place.

OITNB’s first place in the digital stakes bags it fifth overall, with Star Wars’ second good enough for sixth in the wider chart.

Italy_Top10_OverallTeen Wolf reappears in seventh place, with NBC’s hybrid procedural Blindspot making an unusual in-road into the top ten with 2.2 million demand, placing it above comedy The Big Bang Theory, whose 1.9 million gives it ninth place, and Gilmore Girls, which is in tenth with 1.8 million.

Parrot notes that many of these titles skew female, giving some indication of the demographic split.

Intriguingly, demand for The Walking Dead is not as intense in Italy as elsewhere. Despite season seven being more than three months away, other territories have seen the zombie drama, which is the US’s highest rated series, desperate for new updates.

The digital chart sees OITNB picking up 2.9 million daily demands, with Star Wars taking 2.8 million. These show are almost three times as in-demand as the third-place 11/22/63, which is once again Hulu’s sole contributor to the top ten.

Daredevil, which is often positioned in the middle of the digital chart, is in fourth, with oft-top House of Cards only in fifth with less than one million demands. Another past table-topper, Narcos, is in sixth with 702,000, followed by Sense8 (664,4000), Marco Polo (612,800) and Jessica Jones (452,500) in seventh, eighth and ninth.

Netflix’s anarchic adult animated series BoJack Horseman makes a rare appearance in the top ten, which suggests Italian comedy tastes – at least in part – differs to many other areas of Europe.
