This puts Leatham in charge of shows including Strictly Come Dancing, Top Gear and Dragons’ Den.
Significantly, Leatham has extensive business acumen, a trait Linsey made clear would be necessary for its future genre directors. Leatham has previously worked for the BBC’s commercial rivals ITV and Channel 4 in the UK.
Controller of business, drama and films Nick Betts, another business-minded BBC exec, replaced Mark Freeland as genre director of scripted at BBC Studios last month.
Leatham will report to Linsey when he takes up his new post in July.
“Roger has a proven track record as a formidable business leader and in building crucial relationships with creative talent,” said Linsey.
“Working with our editorial heads, he will enable BBC Studios entertainment and events to grow, providing the business leadership to underpin their creative ideas and achieve success.”
