MIPCOM spotlight on Japan, MIPCancun moves

Japan will be the country of honour at MIPCOM while the MIPCancun event is moving locations.

The focus on the Asian country will involve a close look at 4K, with Japanese companies leading the technological wave in UHD and Japanese homes tipped to adopt 4K sets at a faster rate than in Europe or the US.

Japanese public broadcaster NHK also plans to show the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 8K.

The other major focus will be on animation, another area of expertise for Japan. Cartoons account for the majority of Japan’s programme exports and new shows will be unveiled as part of the MIPCOM push.

“The Japanese television industry offers many exciting innovations, notably in the field of 4K and High Dynamic Range imaging, which we hope you will explore here in Cannes,” said Mabito Yoshida, deputy director-general of Japan’s Information and Communications Bureau.

Meanwhile, Reed Midem’s Latin American-focused MIPCancun event is moving to a new location this year. This year’s market will take place in the Grand Fiesta Americana hotel.

MIPCancun takes place between 16-18 November and will be the third edition of the event.

Reed Midem said buyers from Azteca, DirecTV, Discovery, Disney, Fox, Google and HBO have already confirmed they will be in town.
