Terra Mater said it had shopped over 250 hours of factual programming in Cannes and deal highlights include Germany’s WDR buying blue chip wildlife four-parter Wild Canada (pictured) and another show in the franchise, Wild France.
In another German deal, N-TV picked up Killer IQ – Lion vs. Hyena.
Swedish pubcaster SVT bought a 22-hour package that included Nile – The Ultimate River and Brazil – A Natural History. Other deals included Chinese state broadcaster CCTV buying Nile – The Ultimate River.
In digital, John Hendricks’ factual SVOD service CuriosityStream bought a 23-hour package of science and history docs.
African pay TV operator Multichoice, meanwhile, took 28 hours for its VOD service. Also in Africa, South African pubcaster SABC bought TMFS’s Doctors without Borders and feature doc Among Wolves, among others.
“Series are this market’s top sellers, be they three- or up to five-part productions,” Sabine Holzer, head of TV at Terra Mater Factual Studios said. “Nature, science or history: all of our genres appeal to the most different markets.
“Quality comes with a price, though – however, over the last couple of years we have managed to secure stable and mutually rewarding business relationships with big channels such as National Geographic or PBS in the US, France Télévisions in France or NDR in Germany.”
