Electus, Marta Kauffman making US Doc Martin

ben_silverman_1Ben Silverman’s Electus and Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman are joining forces to make a US version of popular UK comedy-drama Doc Martin.

The pair have optioned Doc Martin from UK-based distributor DRG which sells the format. In the UK the series has run to six seasons on commercial free-to-air channel ITV and a seventh has been ordered.

It follows a talented surgeon who develops a fear of blood and moves to a sleepy seaside village to become a local doctor. It is based on a character in the 2000 comedy feature film Saving Grace.

In the US, Kauffman’s prodco Okay Goodnight will adapt the series alongside Electus. Kauffman will executive produce alongside Silverman (pictured) and Sean Canino.

The format deal was negotiated by Electus’ international boss, John Pollak and DRG’s commercial director, Wayne Davison.

The UK series is produced by Buffalo Pictures in association with HomeRun Productions. There are seven local versions of Doc Martin already made, including in the major markets of France, Spain and Germany with TF1, Antena3 and ZDF respectively.

“We are thrilled to be adapting this hilarious smart show for America,” said Electus Chairman Ben Silverman, “Doc Martin has charmed viewers worldwide with its excellent concept and unique style of comedy, and we’re proud to be working with Marta Kauffman on this exciting show.”
