USA launching Mr. Robot on free digital platforms

USA Network is launching the debut episode of its new drama series Mr. Robot on numerous digital platforms ahead of its linear bow.

The pilot to the new show will be available on iTunes, Amazon, XBOX, Google Play, Vudu, PlayStation, M-GO and YouTube on May 27.

The pilot from the series, which follows a young programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and as a vigilante hacker by night, will also be available on websites including EW.com, Twitch, Crave Online, IMDb, and TheVerge.com.

The linear Mr. Robot series will then debut a month later, on June 24, on cable net USA and NBCUniversal US Hispanic stable mate Universo.

USA Network said the pre-linear digital launch, which it described as ‘one of the widest pre-linear distribution plans in cable TV history’, is designed to encourage sampling, notably among millennial viewers.

“It is more important than ever to push boundaries in order to break through the clutter and reach new audiences,” said Chris McCumber, president of USA Network. “Mr. Robot gives us a unique opportunity to make some noise and drive word of mouth through this innovative pre-linear strategy.”

USA added that it will release a version of the pilot with Spanish-language subtitles ahead of the linear launch for various VOD destinations and websites including Telemundo.com, Terra.com and Latina.com. From June, USA will subtitles all originals and new theatricals in both English and Spanish language.

USA Network executive VP of marketing and digital Alexandra Shapiro said: “Our goal is to get as many influential, diverse and passionate general market and Hispanic fan bases to watch the pilot well in advance of its linear premiere so they become evangelists for the series.”

The news comes soon after NBCU-owned broadcast network NBC revealed it would launch the entire season of new drama Aquarius soon after its linear TV debut.
