France’s Gaumont Animation is working on an animated remake of slapstick comedy legends Laurel and Hardy.
Gaumont will finance, produce and distribute the 2D 78x7mins Laurel & Hardy after optioning rights from Larry Harmon Pictures Corporation.
It is nearly 50 years since Larry Harmon Pictures and Hanna-Barbera created the last Laurel and Hardy toon series. Gaumont’s effort will target kids aged 5-8.
“I am so excited to see that one of the world’s leading animation producers recognises the special opportunity to introduce these iconic characters to a whole new audience,” said Susan Harmon, widow of Larry Harmon and president of Larry Harmon Pictures.
“The lovable Laurel and Hardy made me laugh as a child and I know they will do the same for today’s kids and hopefully for many generations to come.”
“Laurel and Hardy are without a doubt two of the worlds’ best-known icons. To be given the opportunity to re-launch this unique iconic property has been a dream of mine for many years,” added Gaumont’s managing director, Pierre Belaïsch.
