IPTV subs hit 100m, research shows

Global IPTV subscriber numbers topped 100 million for the first time in the first quarter of this year, according to new stats by research firm Point Topic.

The firm said there were 4.6m new IPTV subscriptions during the Q1 2014 period, taking the total number of subscriptions to 100.9m.

This represented 4.8% growth in the first quarter, matching the growth seen in Q4 2013.
“Eastern Europe reported the highest level of IPTV growth in Q1 2014 with net additions of 0.63m resulting in growth of 11.6%,” said Point Topic.

The East Asian IPTV market grew by 5.7% after adding 2.58 million new subscriptions in the quarter.

The top ten IPTV countries for Q1 2014 remained “broadly static,” according to the research. China led with 32.7 million subscribers, followed by France with 14.8 million, the US with 12.3 million, South Koreawith 9.1 million and Japan with 4.5 million.

The Russian federation came in sixth place with 3.6 million subscribers, while Germany had 2.7 million, the UK 1.9 million and the Netherlands 1.8 million.
