Greenbird buys into Frank Spotnitz’s prodco

UK production group Greenbird is acquiring a minority stake in The X Files writer Frank Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions.

It is the latest investment made by Greenbird after it bought into fledgling UK indies including Riverdog Productions and Rumpus Media. It said the deal with Spotnitz would see it provide the US writer and his prodco with services and support as it develops international drama projects.

Spotnitz, whose other credits include Hunted, Strike Back and Transporter the Series, has been based in London for four years, but last week told TBI he is in the throes of relocating to Paris.

“This is an incredibly exciting time in television, with more opportunities than ever to produce interesting and creatively challenging series for a broad audience,” he said. “With our experience in both the US and Europe, I think Big Light is uniquely placed to produce the kind of high-quality dramas viewers love.”

Greenbird joint managing director Stuart Mullin said: “Frank’s experience and creativity is amazing, and Big Light has a really exciting slate of projects in development. He has strong relationships across the world with both traditional and new content partners. We are delighted to be working with him to do what we can to help his ideas make it from script to screen.”

Big Light’s development slate includes Freud, with Carnival Films and The Man in the High Castle, based on the Philip K. Dick novel and to be produced with Scott Free.
