Netflix buys Oscar hopeful

Streaming service Netflix has acquired exclusive rights to Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life, an Oscar-nominated documentary from filmmaker Malcolm Clarke.

The purchase of the 1x38mins doc comes in the same week its subject, Alice Herz-Sommer passed away at the age of 110.
Herz-Sommer was the oldest-known Holocaust survivor and the film looks at her life.

Netflix will launch it on April 1 in the US and Canada.

The film is up for a Best Documentary Short award at the Oscars next month. Netflix already has exclusive rights to another Oscar-nominated doc, The Square, which it picked up last year.

“Telling Alice’s story was a life-changing experience for everyone involved with the film,” said Reed in a statement. “We are so glad to partner with Netflix so that their viewers will be able to enjoy Alice’s infectious love of life and bright spirit,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.
