Netflix tipped to launch in Belgium, France and Germany

Orange-is-the-New-Black_2LBelgium, France and Germany are likely to be the next international territories in Netflix’s ongoing international roll out, TBI understands.

The US-listed company, which reports fourth quarter and full-year results later today, has already launched in Latin America, the UK and Ireland, the Netherlands and the Nordic territories.

Sources at major content suppliers have indicated that Netflix is now gearing up to launch in France and Germany as well as Belgium, greatly increasing its European footprint.

Reuters has previously reported that Netflix executives have met with French officials to gain an understanding of the regulatory and legal challenges surrounding a launch and were also heading to Germany with the same intention.

TBI understands that a Belgian launch is also being lined up.

The company added 1.4 million international subs in the last quarter, taking the total to 9.4 million. In its last results Netflix said it expected about 1.3 million net additions in the three months to end-2013.

“Our success this year in increasing international net additions to nearly the level of our domestic net additions shows substantial momentum and confirms our belief there is a big international opportunity for Netflix,” company CEO Reed Hastings said in the firm’s last results announcement.

Netflix, which offers subscribers original shows such as Orange is the New Black (above), will issue its latest figures and an update on the progress of the business after US markets open today (January 22).
