Netflix ‘not set for Comcast set top boxes’

A top Comcast executive has downplayed media reports the US cable company is planning to add a Netflix app to its next set-top box.

Numerous US reports claimed talks on a ground-breaking deal were close to producing an agreement, which would see the SVOD service available through a cable subscription.

A key narrative in US content distribution has been how cable platforms can viably co-exist and compete with OTT services, especially Netflix, meaning a deal would break new ground.

However, Comcast Cable president and Comcast executive VP Neil Smit said there was “nothing to report” and that it was “not really a high priority for us” as customers could access Netflix through other avenues.

Speaking to analysts on a conference call for Comcast’s third quarter results, Smit said the new Internet Plus offer, which will allow customers access to premium channel HBO as part of a basic tier package, would help to bring young adult ‘Millennials’.

“As [we] look at the video landscape, we’re seeing windows move around, and we’re focused on making sure our customers get a complete offering of products, as well as current season,” he added.
