Amazon gets Vikings as part of new MGM deal

Amazon has expanded its content deal with MGM and will take US streaming rights to hit drama series Vikings for its Prime Instant Video service.

Amazon’s UK and German service, Lovefilm, already has rights to the drama, which is produced and distributed by MGM. It performed well on US cable net History in a Sunday night slot following The Bible and a second season has been ordered.

The US streaming deal is part of a wider programming agreement between Amazon and MGM. It also covers a raft of the studio’s movies including Platoon, Annie Hall and Fargo, which is currently being adapted for TV by MGM.

Brad Beale, director of digital video content acquisition for Amazon said: “Adding a collection of great MGM films, along with Vikings, is an example of how we’re continuously working to offer our Prime members some of the best content available anywhere.”
