Huguez exits, Thornton takes over in Starz distribution shake-up

MichaelThorntonStarz has upped Michael Thornton in a reorganisation of its distribution activities that also sees Ed Huguez exit.

Thornton (above) has been elevated to chief revenue officer, a new role that puts him in charge of network sales and affiliate marketing and international programme sales and digital media.

Huguez is stepping down as president, affiliate distribution at the US premium cable network. He will remain as an advisor until the end of the first quarter of 2014.

Thornton joined Starz in 2011 from Disney/ABC and has been upped from executive VP, acquisitions, business and legal affairs, a role that saw him head up acquisitions.

Starz CEO Chris Albrecht made the announcement. He said: “In the rapidly changing media business landscape, it is important for Starz to unite together the revenue businesses of affiliate sales and Starz Distribution under one senior executive. In his short time at Starz, Michael’s wide-ranging talents and contributions to the businesses have been incredibly valuable.”

Addressing Huguez’s departure, the Starz boss said: “During his tenure, Ed has been instrumental in increasing the value of the networks, the channels’ distribution and revenue. We thank him for his hard work and dedication to the company and are grateful for his help during the transition.”
