Sunny Side reveals 2013 attendance numbers

The Sunny Side of the Doc documentary festival and market taking place in La Rochelle this week attracted 1,850 participants, its organisers said. That compares with 1,755 last year.

SSOTD_13Of the total, 293 were buyers or commissioning editors compared with 286 in 2012.

There were 315 companies exhibiting in all and 22 first timers. Companies exhibiting for the first time included CCTV (China), Brazilian TV Producers, AP Archive and the Doha Film Institute.

Organiser Yves Jeanneau said there are signs of an upturn in the European documentary market after four years with more event docs on new channels and platforms, more multiplatform projects and the rise of Asian market.

“All of these lead to a rise in the number of stands and delegates at this 24th Sunny Side,” Jeanneau said at the start of the event. “The market will be the most international documentary platform that we have ever organised.”

The La Rochelle market sits alongside its equivalents in Mexico, Latin Side of the Doc, and Kuala Lumpur, Asian Side of the Doc.
