Canadian WW2 drama series Bomb Girls has been cancelled by Global but the Canadian broadcaster has ordered a two-hour TV movie rounding off the stories from the show.
The show follows a group of women working in a war time munitions factory and performed well on Global and US cable net ReelzChannel, but the Canadian broadcaster decided against greenlighting a third season.
Muse, which produces and distributes the series, along with Sonar, issued a statement following the news there would not be a new series.”The executive producers and producers of Bomb Girls are saddened to learn that Bomb Girls is not being renewed as a series for a third season. We are very proud of the remarkable work done on this series by our writers, cast and crew.”
At C$2 million or more an episode it was an expensive series to make, but insiders said they were quite shocked by news of the cancellation.
The statement added: “We are deeply moved by the embrace that viewers of all ages and demographics have given to the show and by the spontaneous support we are receiving from thousands of Bomb Girls fans across North America and Europe.”
Fans have organised a Twitter campaign to try and convince Global to change its mind.
A Muse spokesman said that one of the show’s creators, Michael MacLellan, and a writer from the first season, Shelley Eriksen, will pen the TV movie. They were meeting Global yesterday to discuss the TV movie and it is expected to go into production in the autumn and to air in the winter.
Key talent are contracted to work on the TV movie, but some cast members from the series will not feature.
In the US the TV movie is expected to be on Reelz, but that has not been confirmed.
