NATPE News: Discovery takes Half the Sky for Lat-Am nets

Discovery Networks Latin America has acquired Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide from FremantleMedia Enterprises.

The four-part series will be carried on Discovery’s Home & Health channel across 44 countries in Latin America.

Inspired by the best-selling book of the same name by the husband-wife team of Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn – Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide looks at women across the globe who fighting against sex trafficking, maternal mortality, education barriers and sexual violence.

The show is introduced by George Clooney.

“Through [Nicholas and Sheryl’s] efforts, thousands have been inspired to take action to support human rights issues on women’s health, education, sex trafficking, violence and economic empowerment,” said Sheila Aguirre, senior VP, sales and development, Latin America, Caribbean and Hispanic USA, FME.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide premiered in the US last October on PBS.  The series averaged 1.4 million viewers with a 1.1% share.
