NBC launching new kids block

US network NBC is moving back into the kids business with the launch of a new Saturday morning programming block by Sprout.

The broadcaster has already started acquiring content for the block and has closed a deal with Coolabi to buy animated series Poppy Cat.

The block, which launches in July, replaces the Qubo block. Qubo was a joint venture between ION Media Networks, Nelvana, Scholastic, Classic Media and NBC Universal.

Sprout is a joint venture between NBC Universal-owned Comcast, public broadcaster PBS, Sesame Workshop and private equity investor Apax Funds.

Poppy Cat, the 52x11mins series commissioned by Nick Jr in the UK, will be one of the first series to air on the block.

“Getting a place in the new NBC Kids block is a major achievement for Poppy Cat and we are delighted that her adventures will be seen by even more kids in the US,” says Zoe Scurfield, head of production and development at Coolabi.
