Netflix to coproduce second season of Lilyhammer

Netflix is to coproduce a second season of international mob drama Lilyhammer, marking another step in the company’s original content push.

This comes ahead of the debut of the show, which stars The Sopranos‘ Steve Van Zandt. The first season of the eight episode series is to launch on Netflix in the US, Canada and Latin America on February 6.

Lilyhammer was acquired by the online video service last year and was the company’s first move into original programming ahead of new series including David Fincher’s remake of political drama House of Cards and new episodes of quirky comedy Arrested Development.

It was originally produced by Scandinavian indie Rubicon for Norwegian broadcaster NRK in association with SevenOne International, the sales arm of German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1, which is distributing the show internationally.

Lilyhammer is great dark, funny television, marked by great storytelling and outrageous culture clash and Netflix is incredibly proud to be bringing it to US, Canadian and Latin American members,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer. “Fans of Stevie Van Zandt will be thrilled to have him back on screen in such a familiar role, but in an all new setting.”
