Breakthrough moves into movies

Breakthrough Entertainment has launched a dedicated feature film unit. Marina Cordoni will head the new division from the producer and distributor. As VP, movies, she will oversee all acquisition and distribution for the film division.

Toronto-based Breakthrough has long produced and sold TV movies, including the Shadow Island Mysteries series and A Wake, and distributed independent features. The company said that launching the new unit formalises its involvement in film and that it will represent independent movies across theatrical, TV and home entertainment windows.

The film unit launches with a six-strong slate: dramas Gods of Accident and Dancing on the Edge, romantic drama Coffeee, Sex, You, thriller The Wrong Mr Johnson and comedy Hooked on Speedman. It also has rights to contemporary Western Good Day For It.

“The establishment of a dedicated film distribution division – added to our company’s robust television production and distribution operations and renowned digital entertainment and games division – further positions Breakthrough Entertainment as a fully-integrated entertainment studio,” said Nat Abraham, president of distribution for Breakthrough.

“The emergence of digital platforms is one among a number of recent developments that are generating new opportunities for the independent film production community,” Cordoni said. “In speaking with many film producers, one common theme has been the need for a distribution home that is both flexible and accessible enough to positively address their unique business objectives.”
