Netflix cuts Telemundo deal

Netflix has inked a content deal with Telemundo, giving it a raft of Spanish-language content for its upcoming Latin American service.

The online video service has struck a deal with the NBC-backed Spanish-language content powerhouse for 1,200 hours of original content a year. Titles include Telemundo’s biggest recent hit La Reina del Sur (The Queen of the South).

Luis Daniel Capriles, VP, international digital media at Telemundo Internacional said the company wants to support Netflix as it expands into Lat-Am and will tailor the content it provides its new partner based on data from Netflix about what titles are proving popular. “The growth of Netflix’s SVOD platform is in our priority list as part of our expansion into all new media and emerging platforms,” he said.

Netflix has talked up its international expansion plans, but outside of its US base has only launched in Canada thus far. The Lat-Am launch was announced in July and Netflix’s on-demand services will be in 43 countries across the continent by year-end.

The next launch countries for Netflix are expected to include Spain, the UK before rolling out in Asia.
