Netflix moves into original content with Fincher’s House of Cards

US and Canadian online video service Netflix has acquired David Fincher’s political drama House of Cards, marking its first move into original programming.

The company, which operates a DVD rental service as well as an online streaming video platform, has acquired 26 episodes of the series from US production company Media Rights Capital. It confirmed the acquisition following a week of media reports.

The series was originally a British political drama, written by Michael Dobbs, but will be reversioned against the backdrop of US electoral politics starring Kevin Spacey.

The show will begin production in the spring of 2012 and will air its first, 13-epiosde season at the end of 2012.

“The gripping, serialized one hour drama has become a very important part of the Netflix experience,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “David Fincher’s unique vision, the indelible performances of Kevin Spacey and the original version of “House of Cards,” all have a big following among our members, giving the series a very good chance of becoming a fan favorite. We are thrilled to be working with this amazing team.”
