Sony launching Strictly Vocal

Sony Pictures Television International is launching a new talent show format at MIP TV, Strictly Vocal. Developed in-house by Sonys US team, the talent show has already been picked up by NBC in the US, where it will be called Sing Off.

The format pitches eight individuals and acapella groups against one another in front of a live audience and panel of judges. Sony says it’s the first show to capitalize upon the current popularity of acapella.

“No-one ever expected ballroom dancing and ice skating to be the hottest things in terms of ratings and I think we have another show that will surprise people,” Mike Morley, executive VP and chief creative officer, international production, at Sony Pictures Television International told TBIvision.

The format is being distributed bu Sony-owned producer and distributor 2waytraffic.

Sony’s other new launch at MIP is The Wall, a gameshow in which teams are separated by a giant LED wall that hides cash prizes. Sony is pitching the format as either a 30-minute or 60-minute show that can play in primetime or be stripped.

Sony acquired the global rights to the format from Ludus, the production company run by ex-Action Time execs Trish Kinane and Stephen Leahy. Sony is keen to push the off-screen potential of the show. “It¹s been developed with revenues in mind,” says Morley.
