HBO Asia names new China chief

HBeibei FanBO Asia has upped Beibei Fan to executive VP for new business and managing director of China.

This puts her in charge of all aspects of HBO Asia in China, from distribution and production in new business opportunities throughout the continent.

She is a 15-year veteran in Asian content, working for the likes of HBO cousin Warner Bros., The Walt Disney Company and China Central Television (CCTV).

She joined HBO Asia, the Asian arm of Time Warner’s premium cable channel HBO, in August 2014 as senior VP of new business, and has since placed content with the likes of Tencent Video. She also launched an SVOD service that houses series such as Game of Thrones, Ding Ji Ju Chang, with local partners such as BesTV, SiTV and China Mobile.

Last year, she spearheaded the launch of HBO Asia’s first Chinese coproduction film project with China Movie Channel.

HBO Asia also hired former MTV China chief Jessica Kam to become senior VP of original productions.

“Beibei has done an excellent job for the company and this promotion is recognition of that contribution,” said Jonathan Spink, CEO of HBO Asia.

“With Beibei at the helm of our business in China, we are confident that we will be able to strengthen our commitment and strategy to bringing our content to more viewers in China.”

HBO Asia has been pushing heavily into original content, and last year launched its first production out of Taiwan, a series is based on Taiwanese short film The Busy Young Psychic.
