NBC axes scripted formats, reveals new series

Scripted-logo-460_2Mysteries_of_LauraUS broadcast network NBC has axed scripted formats The Mysteries of Laura and Game of Silence, as it adds seven new dramas and five comedies for its 2016/17 season.

Laura, which stars Debra Messing (pictured) and is based on Spanish series Los Misterios del Laura, will end after its second season, while Game of Silence, based on Turkish drama Suskunlar, has seen its first run rate poorly.

Also being axed after a season are Eva Longoria vehicle Telenovela, medical drama Heartbeat and midseason family comedy Crowded. Third season comedy Undateable has also been chopped.

New for the 2016/17 season are comedies The Good Place, Great News, Marlon, Powerless and Trial & Error, and dramas including The Blacklist: Redemption, which is a spin-off of ratings hit The Blacklist.

Timeless, which comes from Blacklist producer Davis Entertainment, has been handed the coveted 10pm Monday slot. The action-adventure show follows a scientist, soldier and history professor, who travel through time to stop a mysterious criminal from destroying modern-day American. David produces with Kripke Enterprises and MiddKid Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television, which has international sales rights.

This is Us is an ensemble dramedy from 20th Century Fox Television, while Taken is a TV adaptation of the Liam Neeson movie trilogy of the same name. Universal Television and EuropaCorp TV coproduce.

Universal is coproducing fantastical mystery drama Midnight, Texas with David Janollari Entertainment and Wizard of Oz adaptation Emerald City. Chicago Justice is the latest Dick Wolf-Universal TV effort.

On the comedy front, Universal and 3 Arts Entertainment are behind Michael Schur series The Good Place, which stars Kristen Bell and Ted Danson, while Great News, about a women whose mother begins interning at her news station, is from Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, Universal Television, Little Stranger and 3 Arts.

Marlon is a Marlon Wayans vehicle from Universal TV, Wayans Brothers Entertainment, Bicycle Path Productions and 3 Arts, while Powerless is a DC Universe-inspired workplace comedy and Trial & Error is a fish-out-of-water legal laugher from Barge Productions and Good Session Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Other reported news coming out of the broadcast networks includes CBS picking up transgender drama Doubt to series, and Fox axing Minority Report and Chance.
