Sky shutting 3D TV channel

Sky_3D_Cardiff_08UK pay TV operator Sky is closing its 3D channel.

The linear service will close the 3D service in June. It launched almost five years ago, amid much hype about the prospects for 3D TV, but it failed to generate widespread consumer interest.

Sky said it will continue to provide 3D content on an on-demand basis.

“From June Sky 3D is going fully on demand,” Luke Bradley-Jones, brand director, TV products, said in a blog post.

From the latest 3D movie premieres like Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men Days of Future Past and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, to the very best in natural history with documentaries like Natural History Museum Alive, it will all be ready and waiting for our customers to view whenever it suits them.”

“The changes to 3D are all part of making our on demand offering a fantastic destination for customers,” he added.

Sky said that seven million of its UK customers have now connected to its on-demand services.
