NBCU comedy SVOD service Seeso shutting

Scripted-logo-460_2SeesoNBCUniversal is shutting its comedy-themed SVOD service Seeso.

The US service’s future has been in question for the last few months, and a blog post on Facebook yesterday confirmed its closure.

Seeso originals such as HarmonQuest, Hidden America with Jonah Ray, The Cyanide and Happiness Show and My Brother, My Brother and Me have transferred to streaming app VRV.

NBCU has not yet decided where upcoming Seeso originals such as Johnny Carson origin story comedy There’s… Johnny! will play.

Seeso launched in January 2016 as an early step into the SVOD space for Comcast-owned NBCU, which operates the NBC broadcast channel and cable nets such as USA Network and Bravo.

The service debuted by offered episodes from NBC comedies such as The Office and Saturday Night Live, plus numerous originals and short-form content.

However, a change in NBCU’s digital strategy earlier this year threw its future in doubt, with launch chief Evan Shapiro axed in a restructure.

This week’s news confirms the rumours of Seeso’s demise that surfaced upon his departure.
