US network El Rey has tied former WWE wrestler Rey Mysterio Jr. down to a first-look deal following the success of the pair’s Lucha Underground series.
Mysterio will develop exclusive, first-look and development programmes for the Robert Rogriguez-run channel under terms of the pact.
The veteran wrestler joined reality series Lucha Underground in its second season. He is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, having won three heavyweight championships and wrestled in Mexican luchadore events.
“Rey Mysterio’s incredible talent extends far beyond the ring,” said El Rey Network president and general manager Daniel Tibbets. “He is creative and collaborative and has a keen eye for great entertainment. Rey embodies the El Rey Network brand and we are thrilled to expand our relationship with him.”
Director Rodriguez jointly owns FactoryMade Ventures with Univision Networks & Studios holding a minority stake.
