With the Edinburgh International Television Festival coming up this month, TBI and Parrot Analytics have taken another look at the UK, and our second demand expressions chart has thrown up some significant results. As many predicted, Netflix nostalgia fest Stranger Things has become television’s most in-demand programme.
Stranger Things has been the watercooler series of the summer, and the word-of-mouth buzz has now become hard evidence – the 1980s set mystery drama, ablaze with pop culture references that have captivate SVOD audiences, is top of both of our charts.
Furthermore, a separate Parrot analysis, of the key South American markets, shows the series led the digital originals demand expression charts in 12 markets, including Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, in July.
In Brazil, it averaged nearly 36 million demand expressions – more than four times the amount second-placed Orange is the New Black took.
In the UK digital originals chart, Stranger Things took nearly eleven million average daily demand expressions, over three times the number of the second placed series The Get Down – the Baz Luhrman-created music drama, set in the 1970s at the birth of hop-hop, debuted globally on Netflix on Friday (August 12).
Overall, Netflix provides nine of the ten digital entries. Bojack Horseman, now in its third season and increasingly critically acclaimed, took third place with 1,845,311 average demands, slightly ahead of the oft-chart leader Orange is the New Black, which averaged 1,819,588.
Also above the one million mark is Making a Murderer, which was making headlines over the past week as one of its key subjects, Brendan Dassey, was released from jail with his murder conviction overturned.
House of Cards is sixth in our UK chart with just under a million, followed by Marvel’s Jessica Jones (925,408), Marco Polo (820,527) and The Man in the High Castle (754,924), Amazon’s only representative.
Daredevil, which led our first UK chart (in fact the first TBI-Parrot European demand chart ever) back in April, is now down in tenth, with 737,514 average demands.
Our overall chart is, as noted, led by Stranger Things, which took almost one million than second-placed Game of Thrones’ 9,891,745.
Preacher is in third place with 5,590,456**, with Mr. Robot, recently launched on pay TV net Universal Channel via Facebook, in fourth. Pretty Little Liars is fifth and The Walking Dead, still months off its seventh season launch, in sixth place with nearly four million average demands.
Suits is next with Sky Atlantic’s The Night Of… flying the flag for the true crime boom in eighth. The Get Down is the second digital original making the top ten, in ninth, and the recently recommissioned Ray Donovan completes the chart in tenth.
