El Rey dismisses Matador

Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network has cancelled its sports-spy thriller drama Matador despite having previously handed it a second season.

The show, one of US Hispanic cable net El Rey’s first original scripted series, follows Gabriel Luna as a DEA agent who goes undercover as a professional soccer player.

The first 13-episode season launched in July, but, no international sales have been announced after Entertainment One launched it to great fanfare this year.

This added to high production costs meant El Rey has cancelled the second season. The network described the move as a “business decision”, according to a statement from the network cited on Deadline Hollywood.

El Rey’s other original series, From Dusk Till Dawn, has been taken to a second season.

El Rey launched in May 2013.
