TW Cable launches live mobile TV for Apple devices

US cable operator Time Warner Cable is adding live programming and video-on-demand outside the home to its apps for iPads and iPhones for the first time.

The cable operator will offer selected video-on-demand and live programming from today, accessible over any WiFi connection. Over 1,100 hours of on-demand shows and movies from 26 networks and up to 11 live TV news, sports and entertainment channels, including BBC America, beIN Sports and Fox News.

On-demand services available outside the home include BBC America, Hallmark Channel, Comedy Central, MTV and Univision.

“We were the first provider to bring live television to the iPad in the home,” said Mike Angus, senior vice-president and general manager, video for Time Warner Cable. “Since then, we’ve increased the number of platforms and devices on which our customers can watch live television, and added thousands of hours of Video On Demand programming at no additional cost. The release of this TWC TV update is the next natural step towards our goal of giving customers even more of the content they love on every screen.”

US cable giant Comcast has already made some live content available outside the home to subscribers. However, US service providers have been slower to make content available outside the home than counterparts in some other countries.
