Netflix acquires SevenOne’s Lilyhammer

US video-on-demand service Netflix has acquired exclusive rights to air SevenOne International’s Nordic mob drama Lilyhammer. This move marks the latest move into original programming for the company.

Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, announced at MIPCOM, during his keynote conference session with Miramax chief executive Mike Lang, that it had picked up US, Canadian and Latin American rights to the 8x1hr series.

“It’s a great example of the internationalisation of TV,” he said. “We’ve moved aggressively into this space.”

This follows its recent deal to acquire Beta Films’ Borgia and David Fincher-directed House of Cards.

Lilyhammer is produced by Rubicon for Norway’s NRK and distributed by the sales arm of German broadcaster ProsiebenSat.1. It stars The Sopranos Steve Vamn Zandt as Frank “The Fixer” Tagliano.
